BMW Navigator III plus

The revised version of the BMW Motorrad Navigator III will be available for the 2008 season. As regards external appearance, there is no difference between the new main unit and the Navigator III unit familiar from the 2007 season. Even the printed name "BMW Motorrad Navigator III" remains unchanged. The proven Advanced Mounting Cradle with the four additional buttons on the left-hand side and the fuel-resistant and spray-proof housing with the IPX7 protection rating have been retained. In this context, it is worth noting that the Advanced Mounting Cradle and the fuel-resistant housing are still unique selling points of the BMW Motorrad Navigator.
The map-data stock corresponds to the latest MapSource City Navigator Europe NT version 2008 and has been updated and expanded from the predecessor version. Of the new features supported by version 2008, the inclusion of many Eastern European countries is significant, and coverage of some Western European countries has undergone major improvement. As was the case with last year's model, the map-data stock is preinstalled. The Navigator III plus 2008, therefore, is ready for use immediately after being switched on; there is no need to load detailed map data prior to initial use. Even though the stock of map data is preinstalled, unlike most competitor products the package comes complete with a full version of the MapSource software for the added convenience of PC-based route planning. The MapSource software is available on DVD only. Consequently, a DVD drive is a prerequisite for installing and using the MapSource software on a PC.
By contrast with last year's Navigator III plus, the car kit is no longer included in the kit: this has helped to bring the retail price down from £995 to an amazing £650!! However, the car kit consisting of attachment pad with holder, infrared remote control and connecting cable is still available separately as an accessory. The selling price for the car kit from BMW Motorrad is £60.50, considerably lower than the sum of the Garmin prices for the individual parts.
A new accessory for the BMW Motorrad Navigator III / III plus and III plus 2008 is the TMC module:
TMC traffic-news receiver GTM-12 TMC
The TMC module is a plug-in that connects to the USB port of the BMW Motorrad Navigator.
It can receive announcements concerning traffic disruptions broadcast on the TMC digital radio service (Traffic Message Channel).
The GTM-12 receiver can be used free of charge anywhere in Europe.
Although TMC reception is free in most European countries, subscriptions are required in England and in France: the BMW Motorrad TMC module, however, comes complete with pre-programmed life-long subscriptions for both countries. Consequently, no additional costs are incurred for reception of the service in England and France (this applies to customers from England or France and to customers wanting to use this service on a temporary basis, for example while vacationing in these countries). Note: The use of the Garmin TMC receiver in England or France, by contrast, incurs a usage charge.
Dynamic guidance is the default mode, in other words traffic jams are automatically avoided by suitable detours. The user has the option of deactivating the dynamic-guidance mode. If this mode is deactivated traffic disruptions are indicated by icons on the display; acoustic announcements are audible if the rider's helmet is fitted with the appropriate audio kit.

The other changes
vis-ΰ-vis last year's Navigator III plus concern improvements to the software
functions:
Some minor bugs have
been fixed. The most significant change is that route planning now supports
avoidance of motorways only, in
other words without the simultaneous avoidance of other classes of
main road. No other device
from Garmin incorporates this function.
The improved software is available as a free download for Navigator III or III plus customers from the BMW Motorrad websites (Basic Software Update Version 4.40).
The integrated BMW Motorrad dealership database has also been updated. This updated database is also posted on the BMW websites as a free download for owners of the predecessor models.
All accessories and mounting kits of the BMW Motorrad Navigator III can be used without alteration for the Navigator III plus 2008.
